CCPS Board of Education Names New Superintendent

Mat Bottoms will be the new superintendent of the Carteret County Public School System. The announcement was made late this afternoon at a special Board of Education meeting. Mr. Bottoms will begin his duties July 1 and will fill the position left vacant when current superintendent Dr. Dan Novey begins work as an assistant professor at East Carolina University.

Mr. Bottoms is currently the school system’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, and oversees the maintenance department. He was selected as an assistant superintendent in May 2010.  Prior to that Mr. Bottoms served as principal of Croatan High School since the school opened in 1998. He worked as an assistant principal at West Carteret High School from 1995-1998 and was the school’s band director from 1980-1995.

Board of Education Chair Perry Harker said applications were received from 40 candidates from 14 different states. He said out of this diverse, qualified field, Board members were pleased to find the right person for the role here in the county.  “Mat Bottoms has proven himself as a leader in our school system and his record speaks for itself,” Mr. Harker said. “Mr. Bottoms is an outstanding leader who is focused on student achievement in all areas of their education. He is also a strong proponent for transparency and fiscal responsibility. Mr. Bottoms has dedicated himself to this school system for the past 36 years and he has a strong, progressive vision for our school system.”

For Mr. Bottoms, the new position brings excitement and new challenge.  “I am sincerely grateful to the Board of Education for giving me the opportunity to serve the staff and students of this outstanding school system,” Mr. Bottoms said. “I am humbled and I realize the enormous challenge that I have accepted. My entire career has been spent in Carteret County Schools and I have an overwhelming passion to work for our students and staff.

Mr. Bottoms is a native of Wilson. His wife is Gail Bottoms, who taught mathematics in the Carteret County Public School System for 30 years. Their two children Tyler and Hayden attended the Carteret County Public School System. Tyler and his wife Paige live in Greenville and Hayden and her husband Marcus live in Iowa.
